Therapy Yoga

In Therapy Yoga, emphasis is placed on working with the mental and physical conditions of an individual. Yoga techniques such as posture, breath work and meditation are used to help assist individuals facing health challenges at any level to manage their condition. This in turn helps to reduce symptoms, restore balance, increase vitality, and improve mental attitude.

Therapy Yoga adapts the practice of yoga to the needs of a client with a specific or persistent health problem which may not usually be addressed in a general group setting. It is particularly helpful for recovering from or living with an injury or illness. What might be appropriate and right for one individual, however, may cause injury or even be ineffective in another. What and how we practice can vary depending on how we feel on any given day. Our emotional stability, the level of illness, the degree of injury, or if we are feeling stressed, lethargic, depressed or anxious can all have a bearing on the format of the class. All issues need to be considered in choosing appropriate techniques and how they will be applied in a way that is most beneficial to you the client.

Modern day living often leaves us over stimulated. This creates anxiety and stress leading to stress disorders like fatigue and insomnia. Yoga teaches us awareness and combining the healing benefits of yoga with the quiet awareness of meditation, we can once more find balance in our lives. Finding balance allows us to enjoy good levels of health. Therapy Yoga relieves stress and promotes recovery from an injury or illness. Sessions are modified to specifically fit the needs of any client as we use physical assessment, observation of movement, posture, breath and non-verbal communication, to determine the needs and goals of the client.

Therapy Yoga is open to all. It can be used to treat someone in a wheelchair with adapted poses, to an active teenager or young adults with sports injuries. MS and Cancer suffers can also enjoy the benefit of Therapy Yoga as it is a holistic practice that promotes overall wellness and self-healing.
